Yes, very good as always, Christina. Sadly you won't, none of us will; no way through any book to fathom insanity. Gonna keep on reading them for myriad other reasons though. (Incidentally just addressed a long-standing omission: The Great Railway Bazaar. Fine.). I've been under a rock or something, sorry, missed it ... what the heck's going on: where you going! Your place in Tuscany? x John (Owen)

Thanks so much, John. We're buying a house round the corner from my old flat in Stoke Newington! I wrote about it in last week's Substack, which you may not have seen. And there's still Italy, no longer Tuscany, but Umbria. All luxury stuff, but I'm looking forward to thinking about something other than property! I hope all's well with you. Christina x

You are very welcome. And very right, I did not read last week mostly due to being run ragged prep'ing for my wife's return from two months in Java ( mostly two month's worth of house keeping, sad to admit ). Absent the backstory I read it as you were emigrating not just moving around the corner Ha Ha. Seriously I do empathise, I had similar feelings moving just to Marylebone from Charlotte Street seven years ago. Mind I'd been there for 32 years. So, Umbria, or Tuscany, remains a dream for another time. Maybe I'll see you there. btw I have to thank you for introducing me to Substack, I had a tinker yesterday rather than the usual just reading the email. It could come in handy if I ever achieve some writing even remotely worth sharing! Best x John

Wow, a two-month absence is quite something! And how amazing to live in Charlotte Street! I sold my flat in the summer, so the current move is from rural Northamptonshire (where we spent most of the pandemic and most of the past four and a half years) to Hackney, which does feel quite a leap. I will miss the countryside quite a lot... Christina x

“a tiny mahogany scroll and a slope of eau de nil velvet” Divine. This is a particularly fine piece, so much resonates from our own relatively recent move ❤️

What a lovely thing to say, thank you! Your own move seems to have been a huge success, but God, these things take it out of you!
